He went\non his first sea voyage in 1839 as cabin boy on the \u003ci\u003eSt Lawrence \u003c\/i\u003ebound\nfor Liverpool. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHe later became a teacher before taking to the seas again on\nthe \u003ci\u003eAchushnet\u003c\/i\u003e. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eOn this voyage he abandoned ship and lived among the natives\nof the Marquesas Islands for some time. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eThis sojourn inspired his books Typee and Omoo which were\npublished to great success. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eHe became close friends with the writer Nathaniel Hawthorne,\nto whom he dedicated Moby-Dick. \u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eMoby-Dick and his later works and poetry were not\nparticularly successful in his lifetime.
