May the Best Player Win

by Kyla Zhao

Popularised by the 2020 Netflix miniseries, The Queen’s Gambit, and with the passing of the Singapore Sports Council (Amendment) Bill that formally recognises chess as a sport on 14 January, the strategy game has shed its stereotype as an obscure hobby to become the dark horse of competitive sports. In May the Best Player Win, Zhao explores the cutthroat world of chess through May Li, whose middle-school chess team just earned a victory at the state championship — and with it, a ticket to nationals. The crown is May’s for the taking… except anxious feelings begin to affect her performance and, what’s worse, eat away at her love for the game. Now May is left to wonder: Can you still play for fun when you’re playing to win?

For avid readers of girl power & sisterhood:

The Original Daughter

by Jemimah Wei

An emotionally charged story of sisterhood and ambition that cracks open the fault lines of Singaporean society, The Original Daughter is the debut novel of NTU alumnus (BA and MA) Jemimah Wei. Sisters Genevieve and Arin grow up inseparable, navigating the intensity of life in working-class Singapore. But as the rapidly modernising, winner-take-all world threatens to leave one behind as the other’s star rises exponentially, the sisters must weigh their allegiances and bonds, the cost of success, and ultimately reckon with who they’ve become.

For empaths with a soft spot for heartfelt stories:

Eternal Summer of My Homeland

by Agnes Chew

Seeking to explore the issue of social inequality and well-being in Singapore, the stories in Chew’s first fiction collection illuminate the complexity of choice when duty and desire collide, and what a person is willing to sacrifice. A daughter grapples with an unexpected discovery in the aftermath of her mother’s death. A husband struggles to understand his wife’s reaction to her pregnancy. An adolescent and a domestic worker exchange secrets whose weight they find they cannot bear. And in a corner of Changi Airport, a nondescript office cubicle, a patch of open forest, others strive to find meaning and home.
