Speak of Instapoetry — short-form poetry that emerged with the rise of social media and characterised by simplistic prose and commonplace themes — and the name ‘Lang Leav’ may come to mind. An Australian poet and novelist, Leav is often credited with popularising poetry among a new generation of young readers. Her poetry books and hit novel, Sad Girls, continue to top best-seller charts around the world.

On 21 November, Leav met with readers at POPULAR Waterway Point to talk about her latest anthology, Soon It Will Be Sunday. Through poetry, micro-essays, and ruminations, Leav reflects on the perilous and winding road of being a woman, contending with the conflicting messages we receive from society and the choices we make that ultimately define us, while also addressing the narrowing options women face with the passing of time.

True to her immense popularity, Leav drew a large crowd at the bookstore, with starry-eyed fans crowding the stage area and waiting with palpable excitement for their favourite poet’s arrival. One hardcore fan even arrived way ahead of time, waiting for a good three hours in advance to secure a front-row spot.

Leav took her seat amid applause and cheers, expressing gratitude for the massive turnout and her pleasure to be meeting everyone that evening. Thereafter, the moderator got the ball rolling by posing a series of questions to Leav about her works, as well as taking questions from the floor. When asked about her preferences, Leav revealed that she could not imagine working without pen and paper, and that she definitely prefers fiction over non-fiction books. From her latest works to the creative process she typically undertakes for each project, it was altogether an insightful sharing session where fans got to know more about the author herself.

Then came the moment everyone was anticipating the most: the one-on-one book signing segment. Be it treasured copies of Leav’s anthologies acquired over the years or her newer titles bought fresh off the shelf at the bookstore, fans were giddy with excitement at the opportunity to get their books signed by Leav in person.

Despite the snaking queue and numerous copies needing to be signed, Leav welcomed every fan with a genial smile and greeting without fail. With a fanbase as diverse as Leav’s, some reminisced with her over their encounters with the poet at her overseas events, while others shared how her works have influenced their outlook in life. Each interaction was as heartwarming as it was meaningful, and is sure to leave a lasting impression on both Leav and fans alike.

As the event gradually came to a close, happy fans left with signed copies, new perspectives, and the unmistakable glow of having shared a private moment with the beloved author. And with Leav’s new novel set to be released in July 2026, fans will have plenty more to look forward to in the next chapter of her literary journey.
