A successful businessman of Hokkien descent, Tan Tock Seng works hard, and goes from selling fruits, vegetables and poultry to becoming a wealthy landowner, but he never forgets about helping the poor, needy and sick.

Donating generously to charity, he starts the Chinese Pauper's Hospital at Pearl's Hill — today, this hospital is known as Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
